This trail's secret is kept well hidden by the terrain.

And the locals.

The former route of the Old Put is a Rail to Trail (former railroad tracks converted to multi-use paved paths). Even without the gem at the end, this leg of the X mile trail (see complete official map here) is good for family bikers:

  • Easy free parking Far from the noise and emissions of cars
  • Well maintained paving
  • Relatively flat
  • Not crowded, mostly calm family bikers not aggressive speed demons
  • Well-shaded by overhanging trees

There's nothing particularly distinctive about the beginning of this easy 2 miles (mostly downhill) on the path. You are flanked by a typical East Coast forest with overhanging shade trees and foliage. And there's certainly no clue to what's coming up next.

Then, out of seemingly nowhere, you are on a railway trestle overlooking the literally awesome Croton Reservoir. The 360 views of the "lake" and trees set against the old-school riveted trestle with its wood planks and brown steel crossbars makes for a dramatic and nostalgic moment-especially on fall days.

Younger children or inexperienced cyclists will find the path has a slight but continual uphill incline for most of the way back. It might be good to put them on a Trail A Bike for their first time on this path.

This small take-out only caterer has a different menu everyday. Most days there is a pasta, several sandwiches, soups, and brownies children beyond the basic stage will like.

The former editor of Ladies' Home Journal opened this kitchen in response to the demand for healthier, handmade foods.

Our Cauliflower with Truffle Oil soup and Whole Wheat Mac n' Cheese were flavorful without being so esoteric they'd turn kids off. Grab a few items and head to Gedney Park's picnic area.

For kids who are still eating only grilled cheese and pasta, go around the corner to Cosi for their kid's menu.

This park's 126 acres feel much larger than they really are. Good space planning and a wide range of activities and amenities fool visitors into thinking they're in the country, not a small park in a major suburb.

Have your picnic on one of the tables, then let the kids play in the well-equipped new playground. Before you leave, take kids to the dock overlooking the pond with ducks, turtles, and fish.
